What counts as taxable income in India
This calculator treats your gross annual employment income, in INR, as taxable income, then subtracts an estimated standard deduction of ₹75,000 and applies the 2026 brackets above.
The first ₹400,000 of taxable income is taxed at 0%.
You are a tax resident if present in India for 182+ days in the financial year, or 60+ days plus 365+ days across the preceding four years (with relaxed rules for Indian citizens working abroad).
Common deductions and allowances: Section 87A rebate — tax payable drops to nil if taxable income is ₹12 lakh or below under the New Regime; Standard deduction of ₹75,000 for salaried employees (New Regime); Section 80C investments (up to ₹1.5 lakh) — available only under the Old Regime; HRA and LTA exemptions — available only under the Old Regime.
Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is separate from income tax and is not included in the estimate. Employees typically contribute 12% of basic salary to EPF, matched by the employer. This is a retirement savings contribution, not a tax, but it does reduce take-home pay.
