What counts as taxable income in United States
This calculator treats your gross annual employment income, in USD, as taxable income, then subtracts an estimated standard deduction of $16,100 and applies the 2026 brackets above.
US citizens and green card holders are taxed on worldwide income no matter where they live. Other non-citizens are taxed based on the substantial presence test — a weighted day-count formula across the current and two prior years.
Common deductions and allowances: Standard deduction, or itemized deductions (mortgage interest, state/local taxes capped at $10,000, charitable donations); 401(k) and traditional IRA contributions; Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions; Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction for pass-through business owners.
FICA (Social Security + Medicare) is separate from income tax and is not included in the estimate. Employees pay 6.2% Social Security (up to the annual wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, both matched by the employer. Self-employed individuals pay both halves themselves as self-employment tax (15.3% combined).
