What counts as taxable income in South Africa
This calculator treats your gross annual employment income, in ZAR, as taxable income, then subtracts no standard deduction (none is modelled for this country) and applies the 2026 brackets above.
Residency is based on 'ordinarily resident' status, or a physical presence test (91+ days in the current year and each of the prior five years, totaling 915+ days).
Common deductions and allowances: Primary rebate — a tax credit that reduces tax payable (larger secondary/tertiary rebates apply at ages 65 and 75); Retirement fund contributions, deductible up to 27.5% of income (capped); Medical scheme fees tax credit.
UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) is separate from income tax and is not included in the estimate. Employees contribute 1% of salary to UIF, matched by the employer and capped at a low monthly ceiling — a small amount relative to income tax itself.

South Africa income tax FAQ

Does this South Africa calculator include social security or payroll contributions?+
No. It estimates income tax only. UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) is separate: Employees contribute 1% of salary to UIF, matched by the employer and capped at a low monthly ceiling — a small amount relative to income tax itself. Budget for it on top of the income tax shown.

When is the income tax return due in South Africa?+
The typical filing deadline is 30 June. Deadlines can differ by filer type and residency, so confirm with South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Who counts as a tax resident in South Africa?+

What is the most common mistake when estimating South Africa tax?+
Estimating tax straight from the brackets without subtracting the primary rebate — SARS applies rebates as a credit after bracket tax is calculated, which meaningfully lowers the real bill.
How accurate is this South Africa estimate?+
It applies the 2026 brackets we hold for South Africa to your income. It leaves out credits, surcharges, regional taxes and social contributions, so treat it as a planning estimate and confirm with South African Revenue Service (SARS) before filing.
