Italy uses a progressive income tax system with a top rate of 43%. National IRPEF only — excludes regional and municipal surtaxes (typically 1-3% combined). No flat personal allowance; Italy instead uses employment-income tax credits that create an effective no-tax zone for low earners, not modeled.

What counts as taxable income in Italy
This calculator treats your gross annual employment income, in EUR, as taxable income, then subtracts no standard deduction (none is modelled for this country) and applies the 2026 brackets above.
You are an Italian tax resident if registered in the civil registry, or resident/domiciled in Italy for more than 183 days in a calendar year.
Common deductions and allowances: Employment income tax credit (detrazioni da lavoro dipendente); Regional surtax (addizionale regionale, roughly 1-3%) and municipal surtax — both apply on top of national IRPEF; Dependent family member deductions; Mortgage interest and medical expense credits (19% of the qualifying amount).
INPS contributions is separate from income tax and is not included in the estimate. Employees contribute roughly 9-10% of gross salary to INPS (national social security), with a larger employer-side contribution on top.
